2010 USA-Tech School Recap
The annual Full Pull Productions and USA-East Tech Seminar and School was recently held at thePines Inn located in St. Petersburg, Pennsylvania. Over forty individuals attended this year’s school. This meeting marked the first
time that the National Association of Diesel Motorsports was in attendance. This was a direct outgrowth of the decision to co-sanction events between the USA-East Puling Series and the NADM during the 2010 pulling season. NADM officials held a seminar on their rules which enabled the USA-East officials to become certified as NADM officials as well as earning the S.F.I. certification as well. The SFI Foundation, Inc. (SFI) is a non-profit organization established to issue and administers standards for specialty/performance automotive and racing equipment. This now means all Full Pull Productions Officials will be certified by two different sanctioning bodies for the 2010 season and one of the few only group of officials in the sport of tractor and truck pulling to be dual certified.
Additionally a contingent from the “Bunker Hill Shoot-Out” was present for the first time. Bunker Hill has sanctioned several of the USA-East Classes to pull at their great events during this summer. Their members in attendances participated in the seminar and are now officials with USA-East Sled pulling organization.
The USA-East tech school was administered by R.J Feicht, director of Operations for both Full Pull Productions, and USA-East Sled pulling. Several long-time officials with Full Pull Productions discussed the various classes as well as overall event operations:
- Jack Snyder along with Rob Bryan gave an overview of the new pro Street gas 4x4 truck class to the officials in attendance as to what the class rules are as well as the areas that the USA-East tech Committee deemed the major areas that need to be addressed in the inaugural season of this new class. This class is a cubic-inch limited class which now means those trucks participating in this class will be subject to having their engines “pumped” during the season.
- Justin Martin then went over the “Smoker Series” rules for the combination class that pits the multiple turbo Super Stock tractors against the single turbo pro stock tractors. The rules are the same from last season. One area of discussion that did occur centered on the alcohol fueled tractors that are legal to pull in the class and what the different rules for them are.
- Troy Perry & Keith Moser handled the diesel truck class that USA-East Sanctions during the pulling season. The rules for the 2.6 Street Diesel class did have some major changes in them for the 2010 pulling season with the adoption of the NADM rules with the major change of front hanging weight being allowed for the class. While the Pro Stock Diesel rules remain essentially the same from the 2009 pulling season.
- Dan Perry discussed the 8000 pound street diesel truck rules which will be used at selected locations in 2010 as per request by the various fair and speedway venues. These rules are the same as in the previous years and are what the street diesel trucks pulled under until this year.
- The father and son team of Jamie and Cory Clawson then went over the new 6400 pound street gas truck rules which are the entry level class for stock 4x4 trucks in 2010. This class is scheduled at select events is set up to a true entry level class.
- Mike Gum covered the Limited Pro Stock / Super Farm tractor class for the tech school. The rules for this class are unchanged from the 2009 season and Mike covered some of area that he along with the USA-East Tech Committee feels are ones that need to be addressed at each event.
- Mark & Hunter Strittmatter another father & son team covered the street semi class which also includes the PA Posse. The rules are virtually unchanged from the previous season. Mark detailed some areas that are ones that need to be looked at each event conceding the inspection of the semis that pull in the class. Mark then talked some about the Big Rigs for 2010 and the rules are the same as from the 2009 season. The Big Rigs the Super Semi’s of NTPA are scheduled to compete with each other several times this season which brought up some discussion of the rules between the two organizations. The rules are very close to each other with just some minor differences, none that would give either advantage over the other.
The seminar then moved into the event operations phase with input from several veteran officials such as Howie & Cindi Heltman , Jim Goodhart all who offered input on scale and line up procedures. Mike Williams then talked about the draw bar measurements and what to watch out for so the competitors are all on equal footing.
John Blaney a veteran official of Full Pull Productions as well as the National Farm Machinery Show, TNT Pulling, and NTPA Pulling discussed some of the safety aspects all officials need to be alert for during the pull. John also discussed several different scenarios that he has been involved in over the years to help the officials gain a better understanding of what to expect in the sport of tractor & truck pulling.
The meeting the moved into a general discussion of various aspects of the event operations such as registration, point’s races, track building and weather related issues. The Laser team of Dave and Marie Powell along with their daughter Peggy sand son-in law Chuck Strom then discussed some of the items that track officials need to be aware of while the laser is being utilized at the pulls.
The meeting then conclude with a wrap-up by RJ Feicht thanking all of the officials “Who make up the best officials in the sport of tractor and truck pulling” as Feicht was quoted in saying. The attending persons then enjoyed each other’s company over some light refreshments.
